SALZBURG

SALZBURG, AUSTRIA

Salzburg, in western Austria (Republik Österreich), close to the border with Germany, is split in two sections by the Salzach River – the pedestrian Alstadt (Old City) and the Neustadt (New City). Widely known as the setting for the iconic musical, “The Sound of Music,” and the birthplace of composer Mozart, the city offers diverse attractions, including the stately Mirabell Palace and its manicured baroque gardens, the imposing Fortress Hohensalzburg, overlooking a panoramic view of the city; the towering spires and opulent interior of the Salzburg Cathedral; St. Peter’s Abbey, with its peaceful courtyard and cemetery; and the Getreidegasse shopping street, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its turn-back-the-clock wrought iron shop signs.
